Snow Update/Info

Dear Potomac Shores Residents,

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this unprecedented snow storm. This is the biggest snowstorm since 2016 for our area, and severe weather events like this are dangerous and a challenge to deal with.

Potomac Shores is a large-scale, developing community with multiple entities responsible for maintenance, so we know it can be confusing.

All the private streets are cleared by the HOA or Master Developer. The Brookfield Homes Section and Beazer Homes section are cleared by their builder. All other streets within the community are state-maintained streets and VDOT is responsible for snow removal. At the bottom of this message is a list of the streets within the community that are labeled either private maintained or public VDOT maintained.

Private Streets – For the private streets, our crews cleared one lane and are back today to widen the lanes and clean up the areas. The private shared driveways have been cleared. Additionally, the crews are continuing to treat the streets every day. The warmer weather today will help with the snow melting. We will get there, but it will just take us more time than usual. We strongly suggest residents stay home if possible. Also, please park vehicles in your driveways so it’s easier for the plows to clear the roadways.

Public Streets – For the VDOT public streets, snow removal is first removed from predetermined Snow Emergency Routes, and then streets are cleared from highest to lowest traffic volume. Priority is always given to the roads most needed by the community as a whole, generally in this order:

  • Interstates (I-95 I-66 I-495, etc.)
  • High-volume routes (Route 1, Prince William Parkway, etc.)
  • Main thoroughfares in neighborhoods
  • Residential streets
  • Cul-de-sacs

VDOTs stated goal is to make all roads passable within 48 hours of the storm’s end. I imagine that the shutdown on I-95 significantly delayed their snow removal efforts. We have called and reported the Potomac Shores street conditions to VDOT and requested removal/treatment as soon as possible. We encourage residents to call VDOT at 1-800-FOR ROAD (800-367-7623) as well to report hazardous road conditions. VDOT also has a web tool that shows the status of plowing – www.vdotplows.org.

Sidewalks – The HOA clears the sidewalks at the Shores Club. Homeowners are asked to please clear the sidewalks adjacent to their homes, as well as their driveways.

Trails – While the woods are absolutely beautiful with the snow. Please know that the are many branches and trees down across sections of the trails and significant clean up is needed. If you venture out, please keep in mind there could be further branches, limbs and trees falling and your safety is most important. We will get the trails addressed as soon as possible.
